How often do you see someone wearing a button or lapel pin with a smiley face on it? This classic image is everywhere when you think about it. Customer Service workers wear them on their aprons, teachers put them on students’ tests to go along with good grades, and even some brands adopt it into their logos or marketing strategies. Everyone loves seeing a smiley face be it on a sticker or the faces of friends and family. A smile fills most people with happiness and a reminder that there is so much good in this world.

Did you know there is a whole day devoted to smiling and the message it conveys? It’s called World Smile Day which occurs on the first Friday in October. We at PinProsPlus would be happy to give you a little lesson on the smile, the event, and the creator of them both: Harvey Ball.

Who Created the Smiley Face and When?

Having celebrated its golden anniversary two years ago, the smiley face is actually over 50 years old! Let us take a trip to 1963. In Worcester, MA there was a commercial artist by the name of Harvey Ball. He wanted to create something to convey happiness and good cheer at a glance. So he made a vibrantly yellow grinning face that the audience couldn’t help but love. From then on it has become the icon for general well-being and joy. Harvey had succeeded.

What is World Smile Day?pin-pros-plus-smiley-button

World Smile Day is a celebration held on the first Friday in October created by none other than Harvey Ball in 1999. Over the years, Ball had noticed that the smiley face had become a constantly used image in marketing and advertisements. Fearing that the icon had become too commercialized, Ball decided to create a day in honor of the true meaning behind the smiley face: happiness. One day out of the year, people are reminded not to hold ill will to others for any reason. They are to spread smiles and cheer where they go and try to bring happiness to anyone they can. Ball’s hometown of Worcester was the first city to take up the call and has since spread all around the world.

The Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was created in Ball’s honor after he passed in 2001. It took over his mission and sponsors World Smile Day officially each year. The Foundation holds true to his memory with its slogan of “improving this world, one smile at a time.” The group invites you to “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile!” this Friday!
