Pausing to Remember Veterans

October 16, 2023

Originally called Armistice Day, what we now know as Veterans Day began as a way for the nation to mark the end of World War 1 on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

For a few moments each year, every nation that had sent soldiers to fight and die in “the war to end all wars” paused in silence to remember those buried in Flanders Field.

The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1956 because Congress recognized that not only have service personnel died or been wounded in wars large and small since 1918, but tens of millions of men and women have worn the uniform, ready to fight and die if called upon to do so even in times of peace.Veterans Day – or Remembrance Day as it is called in Canada and Great Britain – honors those who have served in their nation’s Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and, as they did during World War 2, the Merchant Marine.Today, more than 100 years after the end of the First World War, it is common to see people wearing a custom Veterans Day lapel pin alongside the celebrated poppy.
